About Me

I am a criminal defense attorney and probably always have been. As a child, I was often in trouble at school for defending another student against some accusation or another. I have always hated inequality, racism, and bullying by police or persons in power and have felt a true affinity for the little man, the underdog.

Your right to a fair representation is not supposed to be predicated on your ability to pay. For this reason, I champion the indigent volunteering my time in pro bono cases and taking court appointments from trusted judges.

I spent the majority of my childhood believing I would be a prosecutor, a champion for justice. I fulfilled that dream only to realize my destiny did not lay with prosecution. I found the system catered to the rich, privileged, connected and to those in law enforcement. Who you hired mattered so much more to the courts and district attorneys than what you did. I became a defense attorney trying to instill some measure of equity to the cases that came to my desk.

I believe that every man, woman and child of every race and creed deserves to be heard. No crime is so heinous that the accused should not be presumed innocent and afforded every right and dignity prescribed by law. My entire life is predicated on this belief.

I cannot promise to like you or to believe you. I donʼt have to. What I promise to do zealously is to defend you.

I personally handle all cases from inception to the conclusion of the proceedings.  I return all phone calls and emails personally and strive to take some of the fear and anxiety out of the criminal justice system.  Being charged with a crime is emotionally taxing and can overwhelm every family member of the accused.  Having an attorney who understands this stress is paramount to surviving the experience.

As a former prosecutor, Municipal Court Judge and 16 years experience in the criminal justice system.  I have handled over 200 jury trials and over 1,000 criminal cases. I handle all types of criminal cases from Driving
While Intoxicated to Murder.   I excell in the defense of felony charges, including sexual assault, child abuse, murder, aggravated assault and dope charges.

Over 16 Years Criminal Law Experience

Nothing puts an anxious client's nerves at ease better than an attorney with many years of battle-tested success and the passion, know-how and moxie to fight relentlessly for each and every client. In addition nothing makes an opposing district attorney more anxious than facing that same criminal defense attorney. When you work with the Law Office of Katheryn Haywood, you're working with an attorney that has successfully conquered virtually every scenario our criminal defense system in Texas and the United States Government can contrive.

Unparalleled Experience

When you work with the Law Office of Katheryn Haywood, you know two facts up front: 1) not a case exists for which we have not received a successful outcome for our clients. 2) Each case is different; we craft a creative strategy based on specific facts for every client facing criminal charges. The bottom line: successful outcomes for clients facing criminal charges

Let's face it, when you're in the position of needing a criminal defense attorney, you want a criminal defense lawyer who knows how to win. While fighting for and receiving a successful outcome for our clients is routine, what is not routine is the special care and strategic thought that goes into each and every client's case. We are accessible to all of our clients and devise a plan of attack that will best ensure success for you. To paraphrase Gerry Spence, one of the greatest criminal defense attorneys of all time, winning embraces the articles of war, that whatever is necessary to win is acceptable in the genre or war, and criminal cases in Texas are wars. No less. When it comes to serving our clients, there are four categories of successful outcomes sought. Since each case is different and fact-specific, we will work with you to determine which outcome you consider successful:

  • Not guilty verdict
  • Trial before jury (TBJ)
  • Trial before judge/ "court" (TBC)
  • Dismissal
  • Beating prosecution (state) recommendation
  • Other:
    • Plea Bargains (probation or other)
    • Convincing a grand jury to no bill
    • Convincing a police department not to file a charge
    • Convincing a district attorney not to file a case
    • Convincing a district attorney to significantly reduce the charge file
